November 23 Meridian, ID

We're home! We had a 1:15 meeting scheduled with our bosses. We got here at 2:30. Luckily they were able to reschedule their other appointments to work around us. It was a budget meeting. They were pleased with our work this year and might keep us on for awhile. Good for us! Actually they're thinking about increasing our territory again. We may need to quit praying Jabez's prayer. (I Chronicles 4:10)

We're doing Christmas in Kansas from December 3-15. This will be the first time I've had my four grandchildren together. Then we'll do Christmas in Idaho. Two of Jim's children and grandson's will be here for that plus Jeff and Anabella. So we'll celebrate Christmas most of December.

This has been an exciting trip for us. There have been so many things go wrong, truck problems galore, from the water leaks, brake problems to tire blow outs. But it's been exciting to see how God has taken care of us.

The weather situation has been unreal. Other than a couple rains, the bad weather has always been just behind us or before us. Some of the snow storms and wind storms would have been horrible to be in. Even the rain we had in South Dakota was a blessing, because we finally found out exactly where it has been leaking in the truck and was able to fix it.

And this trip we were much more comfortable about knowing what to do and how to get to the Churches and where to stay. That made the trip less stressful.

The fun thing that helped us was the fun things. We had enough time in our schedule to do a bit of sight seeing. We were actually in five national parks since June; Yellowstone, Mt Rushmore, White Sand, Arches and Death Valley. Good thing we have the 'old age' pass so we don't have to pay every time.

Probably the neatest thing about this job is that Jim and I are together day and night. That also could be the worse part of the job. Not every married couple could do that and still like each other. We do!

The scariest part was the carbon monoxide in the truck. The Lord was certainly with us. We could have been so dead. We will get that taken care of before we use it next trip.

Next year our blog address will be TravelAdventures10.blogspot.com . I would be interested in knowing who reads my blog. I'd like it if you would e-mail me at NaomiNaomiC@gmail.com if you read it.

So this is it, I won't write again until next year. You might want to check every month until I start, in case we start early, and we might. Until then, may God bless you and keep you.

November 22 Wells, NV

It's all over but the driving. (And unloading, inventory and more paperwork, etc.)
We got on the road by 9:00 and drove and drove and drove. We choose to drive up north in Nevada instead of the better road up through Salt Lake City. It was only two lane, but it was good. Not much traffic. Mostly all we saw was lots of desert. It was a beautiful day, most of the way. About an hour or two south of Wells, we could see a storm ahead. Snow!!! It really wasn't bad but there was enough that they were plowing the road. We were hoping to go another 100 miles or so tonight, but decided that we could wait until tomorrow.

November 21 Las Vegas, NV

It's with very mixed feelings that we approached today. It's "The Day".

Our sale was at a Spanish Church. We've never done a sale for a Spanish Church. so we stocked up big time, set out shelves outside and a couple lights. Luckily it was a very nice evening.

The Church parking lot was full when we got there. They had a big Church social, with food and games. We were swamped for a couple hours. When we work that fast, I feel like I've been running.

I'm so glad we went to California for the Roma and Dinner Roast. We sold all of them and could have sold more.

We were open about 4 hours, then the closing took longer than usual, so we got back to the motel about midnight. Then Jim got gas so we would be ready to start in the morning. It's almost 1:00 A.M. now. It's about a 11 or 12 hour drive home. That's a big day.

Death Valley National Park

I remember studying about Death Valley in 5th Grade. The only thing I knew was that it was the lowest place in North America at 282' below sea level. And it is hot there. Being raised in Kansas, I really had no concept of mountains, so I pictured it as a big hole in the ground. Boy was I wrong!

In the first place, I'm so glad that we came in November. The temperature was great. It can be 120+ degrees in the summer. We had 70 degree weather. It was such a beautiful day.

I think my pictures will say far ore than I can. I don't know how many ways I can say "WOW".

We got out and walked in a couple places. The first place we climbed a hill that overlooked the valley. Oh! the colors!

When we got to the lowest elevation, we walked there too. In one picture you can see on the mountain a sign showing where sea level is. You will have to look for the sign, it's up there a ways. We walked out on the 'beach'. What makes this area look even lower is the 11,000' mountain beside it. I took a picture of the salt/sand where someone dug. You can see how near the water level is. All this area has flash flood warning signs.

We also hiked in the Golden Canyon. It used to have a one lane road through here but a flash flood went through this canyon and destroyed it. Lucky us, it was a neat hike. The bright rock walls are in this canyon.

We didn't spend near enough time exploring Death Valley. We needed to get back to Vegas. But I kept seeing one more thing.....

They mined for borax here in the valley, so we got to see the wagon that was pulled by a 20 mule team.

And while we were looking at that, there was a Roadrunner posing for his picture.

Finally Jim said 'enough!', so we headed back to Vegas. There's a couple big hills so we took awhile. I drove the rental car behind him. Unfortunately we got to Vegas at rush hour on a Friday night. It's a good thing the truck was big, so I could follow him. But that was tricky a few times.

We were on the highway that goes right by downtown. It was hard to pay attention to driving and peak at the downtown lights, especially when you're going by all these places you've heard about. That was the closest we've gotten to the strip and really have no desire to go check it out. What a life!

We found a restaurant for supper close to our motel. Even that had casinos all over the place. You can't help but notice that no one seemed to be having fun. They just set there and kept making deposit after deposit.

I took a couple pictures of the palm trees to share with you. Some are tall and skinny and some look like big pineapples. And I had to finish up with a sunset. the mountain doesn't show as well as I hoped, but the colors for the sunset were nice.

November 19 Puhrump, NV

I went to California today. We decided we needed some more product, especially the Roma coffee substitute. The Glendale bookmobile Manager, Gene, met me this side of Barstow bringing us Roma, Dinner Roast and a few other things. How nice of him!

We knew that we couldn't take the truck, pick up supplies and be back in time for our 5:00 sale, so we rented a car in Vegas and I drove.

It was about 60 miles of very lonely desert two lane highway. I really enjoyed the beauty going over. There were fields of tumbleweeds, fields of Joshua trees, cacti, sand dunes and lava rock. Some of the fields looked like they planted rock. The mountain ranges were beautiful. Be sure to notice the second picture, the road goes on forever and ever! I saw layer after layer of mountains, all different colors. Coming back was dark...................

I have learned to pay attention to all the different colors and things I see so I can share some of them with you. What used to look like a field of dead weeds now looks like a field of fantastic colors. Weeds go from white, beige, yellows, greens to twenty shades of brown. Even the dirt and rocks are cool. I think I need to notice all this rugged beauty, because Heaven's beauty won't be dead weeds, shrubs and jagged mountains.

I didn't get back to the sale in Puhrump until after 6:00, Jim had really been busy. It was a good sale.

We reached our financial goal tonight for this run. We sold 25% more than our last run. How's that for our economy these days? But we'll be the first to tell you that Jim and Naomi didn't do that, but God blessed our efforts and constant prayers. And we are so excited that He can use even us.

Saturday night is our last sale. That will be the frosting on the cake financially, over our goal. Praise the Lord!!

November 18 Las Vegas, NV

This was kind of a laid back day. Our sale didn't start until 4:00 and we didn't have to drive hours to get here.

We went to Olive Garden for lunch. That was out big excursion for the day.

Our sale was rather slow tonight. The ones that came were happy we came. Several said they forgot until they got there (tonight was Prayer Meeting night). Everyone wants us to come back next time. Part of the problem here is that no one has been here for years, so it will take awhile to train them to come again.

November 17 Las Vegas, NV

The motel had a great breakfast. There were so many choices. You could have waffles, biscuits and gravy, eggs, cereals, fruit, hot drinks, cold drinks or no drinks! There was something for everyone.

We drove through a corner of Arizona to get to Las Vegas. It was a beautiful drive. A couple of the pictures had some trucks on the road in front of us. When you see that little semi on the highway, you get a little idea how big the mountains are. Also, on the last picture you can see our truck in the reflection of the ahead of us.

Whenever I've ever thought about Las Vegas, I've always pictured just the strip where all the casino are. Vegas is really a big town. At night you can see lights everywhere. There are at least 6000 Adventist here and lots of churches. So you can imagine how many other people live here too. We haven't even seen the 'strip'.

Our sale kept us hopping. We were busy all three hours. We met some really nice people. We'll be selling in this area until Saturday night.

November 16 St George, UT

This morning when we went out to the truck (we're staying in motels this week) the first thing we heard was the carbon monoxide alarm. It got down in the teens again last night, so Jim turned the heat on to keep the pipes from freezing. I was going to open a couple windows, but they were frozen shut. We left the door open. It took about 10 minutes before the alarm went off.

We had two sales today. Cedar City Church is small and several of their people were out of town, working or came to our second sale in St George (about 60 miles south). So we had three customers. Luckily it was only an hour sale.

The St George sale was better. We were busy the first hour. We got some work done the second hour until a man came in. He had just toured the Mormon temple. Now he was touring an Adventist Bookmobile. I'm not sure what his religion was, but it was different. Kind of a potpourri of lots of things. He shared with us for about a half hour.

One of the things he shared, was that he used to be a hippie. He still looks like one - he had a gray pony tail in the front and back. His beard was at least 18" long, with a couple bands every 6" or so. Interesting!!!

Our motel tonight is cool. It has part of the room sectioned off as a living room with a small coouch in it. The couch is as hard as a rock. The TV is in the bedroom part. If you set on the couch to watch TV, it won't work. There's a half wall in the way. Good idea, bad planning. Funny!!

November 15 Nephi, UT

Some weeks are faster than others. This was a fast one. There's always too much to do when we restock. Last night we worked until midnight. I did washing and packing until 1:00 A.M. Then both of us were so wired that we couldn't sleep. We put in two more hours before we left town today. We drove at least 8 hours and have 2 1/2 - 3 hours to drive before our noon sale tomorrow.

I did laze around part of one day. I had a sick headache. I haven't had one like that for years. Too much pressure gets me sometimes.

While we were home, my granddaughter started driving the truck. She's good. We may take her and let her drive sometimes for us.

Also when we were driving on I-84 through Idaho, west of Twin Falls, there's a gorge that surprises you. The land is flat until you get to a bridge, then when you look over the railing, there is a deep gorge. This picture doesn't do it justice, but it does give you an idea of the hole in the ground.

November 10 Twin Falls, ID

Notice the boat. Double click to see it better.

After working in the trailer for a couple hours this morning, we drove over to Twin Falls.

We acted like tourist when we drove into town. There's a neat bridge over the Snake River and the canyon around it is fantastic. I took pictures to share with you, but unfortunately it was cloudy enough that my pictures aren't real sharp. Or maybe it's just that I didn't take them out the truck window, like usual.

This is the canyon and river that Evel Knievel tried to jump over back in the 70's. He didn't make it. The ridge over the Snake is one mile across very deep.

I also took picture of the lava rock. Southern Idaho has it all over the place. We saw a lot by Idaho Falls too. The holes in it amazes me. And the big cracks make it look like the edge could just break and fall away. I also like the scrub brush and bushes.

Everyone came to our two hour sale the first hour. But we had good sales anyway.

We're staying in Twin Falls tonight, then home tomorrow. We'll be getting new stock the rest the week and leaving Sunday morning for our last week of sales for this run. We'll be going to Las Vegas. I probably won't write again until Sunday or Monday.

November 9 Idaho Falls, ID

Our first sale today was in Pocatello at noon. that was probably the smallest sale we've had, other then the one last year that no one showed up. I noticed a lot of houses for sale in town, so that must be a pretty depressed town.

Next we went to Idaho Falls. Last time this was where no one showed up. They came this time. We were busy the full two hours.

One lady and her two children were there most of the time. They coughed the whole time. After they left, I went around wiping everything down and spraying disinfectant. I do hope we don't have to share her cold. I've only caught one cold this trip and I think that's enough.

We've been staying in motels all this week. It's so cold out that it's just not fun staying in the truck. It's been down in the teens every night. And after our carbon monoxide scare, I'm not too keen on our heating system.

It's been nice being in a real room, with beds, dressers, table, chairs and TV, just like real people!

November 8 Pocatello, ID

After the great sale last night and Friday, it's hard to believe how good today's sale was. All three sales were at the same place, the school.

Funny thing . . last night it seemed like everyone paid in cash. So by the time I cashed up, I only had eight ones left. I was afraid I would need more, so we stopped at a grocery store. They could only spare 20 ones. The school principal just happened to be in the same store (it was 10:30 P.M.) He noticed that we were getting change so he offered to help us. The school had their Fall Festival, so they ended up with lots of change. So we ended up with 100 ones to start our Sunday sale. Today everyone paid with credit cards, except one person. So I ended up with all my ones!

It seemed like it took us forever to get out of town. First we spent a couple hours working in the trailer, getting ready for our next sale. We had lunch at Marie Callendars. It took 45 minutes at the filling station. And we ran into detours getting back to the highway. we finally got to Pocatello around 7:30.

So we ended up with another 10 hour work day Sunday. Good start for the week.

November 7 Salt Lake City, UT

The school here had their Fall Festival tonight. We were suppose to start our sale at 6:30. At 6:00 they were knocking on the door, wanting to know if we were open. From 6:15 to 9:15 we were wall to wall people. I don't know how they can shop when we're that full. I felt like I was running all evening and I was just standing there checking people out.

we talked to the school principal after it was all over. He said there was probably 650 people there tonight. I'm sure all of them didn't come on the truck, but close. Maybe only 649.

It's almost 11:00 now. Our next sale is at 9:00 A.M. We had to stay late to restock and clean up. Some of the shelves were almost empty. And lots of people have no idea how to put books back on the shelves. The kids games and puzzles were a real mess. It was a great sale. We certainly didn't have any time for visiting with the customers.

November 6 Salt Lake City, UT

How easy it is to get out of a habit. I forgot to write in my journal last night. Now I have to see if I can remember that far back.

We started working around 9:00. I still had the Spanish books to get on the shelves. It's amazing how many more books I can get on shelves that are already full. I emptied two more boxes.

We had a food order for the store here in SLC. So we had to get there by 10:30 to have time to deliver and then be ready for our sale at noon.

Everything went real smooth today. Our sales were good, most people got what they wanted and everyone did not come at once. It was steady sales for about 3 1/2 hours. Of course, we only planned on being open 3 hours. Nice!

The weather was perfect. It was like an Indian Summer Day. We should have a couple more of those this week.

November 5 Salt Lake City, UT

Our week at home flew by. We were busy from one end of it to the other. Stocking in Idaho is a little different from our other stops. When we're home, it feels like we should be able to do home things. Not so! But it was nice being able to sleep in our own bed and use our own washer and dryer (no charge).

Twenty five years ago yesterday, we moved to Idaho the first time. It's a wonderful place to live. Idaho has no earthquakes, tornadoes, humidity or chiggers to speak of. What else can you want? It does have mountains, great camping places and only an 8-10 hour drive to the ocean.

We didn't get away from home as soon as we intended. It must have been around 2:00. We drove about 4 hours to Rupert, Idaho. We stopped for gas and was hoping for supper. That ended up being a bag of chips and a cookie. Sounds like health food to me, doesn't it? We didn't want to take the time for a restaurant because it was getting late and Salt Lake was still around 3 hours further.

About 10 minutes south of town, a spring in the accelerator broke. When it broke, the accelerator stuck. Jim had to get his foot under the gas pedal to make that quit. Then we coasted to a stop beside the highway. Interestingly enough, that was the widest shoulder we saw all day.

During the 90 minute wait for a service truck, we got to watch an amazing sunset over the mountain. It had beautiful colors. And a little later we saw a beautiful moon rise. How many times in our daily life do we take the time to watch either?

Finally the service truck got there. He put a new spring on the truck and only charged $308. That may have broke down to $8. for the parts and $300. miscellaneous.

The sad thing about this is that when Jim had the truck serviced in Idaho, he told them that the spring was too tight. They said there was nothing wrong with it. Jim will show them the bill next week......

So, our God is still in control. He takes care of us every step of the way.

We got to Salt Lake around 11:00. It's late, but I had to write about this while the details are fresh.

We'll be staying in a motel the next 3 nights. It looks like a pretty decent one (for a cheap motel!).

October 29 Ogden, UT

Another miracle! My cousin called me this morning. She told me about the storm that went through Price the day we left. I can't remember now if there was rain or snow but they definitely had a wind storm. My Aunt Florence's garage blew down. They had two cars in it at the time. They were able to get the smaller car out, but the other one is holding up the roof. They couldn't do anything until the insurance people came to look and since the whole town has wind damage, that could be awhile.

I'm so glad that we didn't have to drive in that, or even just being parked during the wind storm could have some very moving moments!

We got our roof vent fixed. The first place we went said the soonest they could do it would be tomorrow. That's what the second place said too. Then they asked when Jim needed it done. He said "Now". So they did it NOW. And they only charged $40. for parts and labor. What a deal!

We got to eat lunch at Marie Callendar's. We had hot potato soup in front of a fire place. On a cold, blustery day, that was great!

We had a lot of great people come in for our sale tonight.

Tomorrow we start for home, after 74 days. We'll only be home a week, restocking for our next trip. We are so low on product. Then we'll go home one more time to restock again for our last trip, to Las Vegas.

October 28 Provo, UT

That was definitely the worse RV Park we've stayed in. It was like the back lot of a motel, with hook-ups. You had to have a key to get in the bathrooms. There were three showers. One didn't have a curtain. Jim said neither did one of the men's. One also didn't have a shower head or knobs to turn on the water. And mine didn't drain. Every little bit you had to kick the water over to the next stall to drain. But we got clean anyway!!!

It really got cold last night. I put two more wool blankets on. then we were okay.

We had been watching the forecast for snow on the mountain passes going to Salt Lake City area. But we couldn't get TV reception last night or this morning, so couldn't tell what it was going to do.

As you see in my pictures, it did snow some, but not much. There were flurries when we were leaving. The road never was wet or slippery. It was kind of like it snowed up to the road only. We didn't have any problems.

We got to Provo early enough to get our parking spot for tonight early. This is a small KOA, but definitely better than last night.

There is a creek beside the camp. And the creek has hundreds of ducks. The owners of the camp feeds them around 4:00. About 3:45 the ducks all came up and stood outside the office door, waiting to be feed. Who said animals can't tell time?

We were working in the trailer while we were waiting to go to our next sale. All of a sudden we heard a loud boom and felt the trailer shake. I thought we had been hit by another truck. But instead, it was several big limbs that fell from a tall tree over the trailer. Jim had to get up there to get them off. It broke our vent cover. I'm so glad that we weren't outside when that happened.

Our sale started out really slow. We probably had two sales in the first 45 minutes. That really is discouraging. But after that the trailer filled and we kept busy.

I think we had more people then usual tell us how much they appreciated us coming. They will never know how much that means to us, when they take the time to tell us.

It seems like we've been tested some today, with lots of little things. But as long as God continues blessing us and protecting us, it's okay. Maybe we'll be better people for it.
