We spent time this morning stocking our shelves again. We're really getting low on product. That's good, because that means we've sold alot. But that's bad, because that means we don't have any or much of the more popular items.
Driving to Moab always makes me want to go through some of the National Parks. Arches and Canyonlands are right here. We go by the entrances to both parks to get to Moab. Hopefully tomorrow we'll be able to do a drive through at the Arches Park.
We had lunch at a nice restaurant downtown, Pasta Jay's. We really enjoyed that.
The first person on the truck told us that it was announced that we were only selling per-orders and that no extra product was available. We were afraid no one would come. But actually, our sales ended up higher than last time. Super!
We tried watching TV tonight. There was a documentary on about the Great Depression. Believe me, that was depressing. But it was interesting.
I couldn't hardly stay awake to watch it though. I'm still not feeling really good. Sometimes I think having a cold is one of the worse illnesses that t person can have. You feel miserable, but how much sympathy can you get out of a cold, everyone gets them.

October 25 Grand Junction, CO
Our first sale was in Delta. I really enjoyed that. I like it when a customer asks me to recommend books. Usually they can't buy as many as I can recommend. And it's more fun when they ask about certain kind of book they want. I had a couple customers like that this morning.
Our second sale was in Grand Junction. We met Ron Carrick before our sale for a quick lunch. Then he came to our sale and visited with Jim between sales. It wasn't very busy, so they had plenty of time. Usually we spend a couple days here, so they had to talk fast since we're moving on tomorrow.
So now we're done working in Colorado. That makes seven states finished and only Utah, Nevada and Idaho left. We're getting close to the end of this trip.

October 24 Montrose, CO
This afternoon we took a nice walk. The weather was so nice, perfect for our walk.
I've been fighting a cold for a few days. I feel blessed that it's a cold and not the flu. And it's been a mild cold. But a cold is a cold, and they're miserable.
We had a sale from 7:30 - 9:30 tonight. It seems like most of our Colorado sales have been down. Must be hard economic times here. Everyone is so glad that we come.
At the end of our sale it started raining. Much, just enough to get the ground wet. It's suppose to get down to freezing tonight, so I hope the rain is done for now.

October 23 Montrose, CO
Joyce and Joel invited us to eat breakfast with them at the school this morning. Monument Valley Mission School is a self supporting school for the Indians. This school has a program where they feed breakfast and lunch to the students. Joyce and her daughter are doing the cooking. It was a very healthy, nutritious breakfast and good besides. We got to visit with Joyce and Joel awhile before Joyce had to go teach the kindergarten class. Joel then showed us the new clinic that he and his son are building. It should be done by the time we come back in the spring, I think.
The hogan is on the school property. The buggy Joel refurbished and uses for rides.
Jim choose a new short cut that he wanted to try, to get back to
Colorado. This is the LAST time he gets to choose a short cut. The scenery was beautiful. The road was treacherous. The roads were narrow, with no shoulders and with drop offs. It wasn't particularly fun! There were several 6%, 8% and even 10% grades gong up and down those mountain roads. Even Jim knows he doesn't want to make that trip in a semi again.
Especially when we were in Utah, the view was wonderful. I have pictures to prove it. It's amazing to see rock mountains rise up out of no where, with flat land all around them. There are so many shapes and sizes. Cool!
In Colorado we saw snow on the mountains. And in once place there was snow within 50 feet of the road. But none on the road, for which we're thankful.
We saw a herd of deer in one field and a flock of wild turkeys in the next.
It's been a wonderful day enjoying God's nature and a horrible day of man-made mountain roads.
Jim got a call today that his cousin's husband died today. Harvey was a wonderful, funny man. It's sad to know he's gone. We'll miss him.
And probably the most disgusting thing happened tonight. Jim went to empty the sewer and it just kind of exploded - all over. It took about an hour to clean that, then Jim had to shower and I had laundry to do. No way was I going to let those clothes be in the truck over night.
Oh no! another disgusting moment - - - there's a skunk outside, the little stinker!
On that thought, I'll quit for the night so we can have sweet dreams.

October 22 Monument Valley, UT
We ate lunch at the 50's diner in Cortez. We've eaten there all three times we've been here. There doesn't seem to be a lot of choices in town.
The drive to Monument Valley is really interesting. First of all, the road is very rough in Utah. I feel like a bobble head doll. Sometimes I had to hold my head against the backrest firmly, to keep from bouncing so much.
The rock mountains are so neat. I took too many pictures again. My pictures are all out the window while we're driving. Some even show the dirty window. But I think they turned out pretty good anyway.

When we opened the trailer for the sale, we weren't too surprised to find several books on the floor. That's only happened about three times so far. We pack them in good, but that road was just too wicked.
The children's books that I mentioned reading the other day, well I sold all of that series tonight, mainly because I had read the books and knew what to tell the lady that they were about. So knowing your product really does help. That kind of thing happens a lot.
My cousins Joyce and Joel and family came on the truck. It's so nice to have family on the route we take.
The campground here is full, so we're parking on the school's grounds. It's right by Joyce's house.

October 21 Cortez, CO
We're back in Colorado. Our noon sale was in Durango. Arlene Schultz was the first person we saw. She's the mother of Jon Schultz that we saw when we went trough Denver. It was good seeing her again.
Our next sale was in Cortez. We were crowded most of the time.
The weather has been cold. It definitely looks and feels like fall. The mountains and trees have been so pretty. The colors are so vivid.

October 20 Farmington, NM
We were just watching the news and weather on TV. Apparently we were blessed in a super BIG way again. Santa Fe had some severe weather problems, from hard winds and heavy rains. Trees were blown over and buildings destroyed. We drove through some rain, but only enough to clean the bugs off the windshield. We could see that Farmington had had heavy rains earlier, but we didn't have to drive through any.
This was our last sale in New Mexico for this year. It was from 4-7:00. The Church knew we were coming, but forgot to put it in their bulletin. Sales were down from last time, but not too much. The church did a telephone tree, calling their members to let them know that we were coming.
I want to share a story that Pastor Blake Jones shared with us. He said that when he first became a Seventh-day Adventist, he started having problems knowing just how important keeping the Sabbath really was. One day he prayed that God would give him a sign to help him understand. About three days later he was in WalMart in the book section. There he saw Mark Finley's book, "The Almost Forgotten Day". At first he was real surprised to see that we sell our books in WalMart. He opened the book and started thumbing through it. This was a much used and well loved book. Page corners were turned down and much was underlined. And of course, that was the only one in the store. Pastor Jones took the book home (with the stores' permission) and read the book. He knew that this was God's answer to his prayer.
Isn't that exciting? God still answers prayer.
And no, Blake Hones is not a relative of mine. Jones seems to be common name.
Norm Carlson came on the Bookmobile tonight. He used to work with us at the Press in Idaho and when the Press was still in California. I found out that he also lived in Kansas City and even worked at Shawnee Mission Hospital with my Dad

October 19 Santa Fe, NM
It feels like a long day driving. I read four children's books while I rode. They were good books, but that gets old. I guess the 6-9 age group could be a little young for me. But I do like to know what the books are about and how I should recommend them.
We were planning on seeing Larry and Donna Daggs after our sale tonight. But they couldn't make it at the last minute. We're disappointed. They were school mates at E.A. too.
Our sale was bigger than last year. That's always nice. The people were very friendly.
When we entered New Mexico, we had a hot shot inspector at the weight station. He said he could hear an air leak, so we had to park so he could do an inspection. He checked everything he think of, from the horn to under the hood. Jim has been taking such good care of the truck repairs that he couldn't find anything 'real' wrong. So he gave us a couple 'warnings' such as Jim not keeping the log book correctly. It's interesting that during all our travels so far and all the weight stations, no one else thought it was wrong. But in spite of all the time wasted, we still made it to our sale early by a little bit!

October 18 Amarillo, TX
It really makes you tired when the first day of the week is an eleven hour work day. Our first sale was in Lubbock from 10-12:00. Then we drove to Amarillo for our next sale, from 4-7:00. It was almost 8:00 before we finished there.
We saw the Dye's again. They belonged to my home church in KC before they got married. And we went to school with a couple of her aunts.
Last night Darrel Marshall give a concert at the Amarillo Church. He set up a table outside our Bookmobile to sell some of his tapes. Before he left, he gave us a couple of his tapes. His travel schedule is pretty extensive.
We have 8 sales this week. Two days with two sales each. This week alone we will be in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah. So it's a big travel week too.
Since we left Keene, we are officially on our way home. We'll be home in 11 days to restock to go back to Salt Lake City. Too bad we can't carry enough so we wouldn't have to do that.

October 17 Lubbock, TX
We must have been more tired than we thought. We slept until 9:30 this morning. And I took a nap this afternoon. We read and took a walk this afternoon too. It was a very lazy, laid back day.
Today is our 315 Month-a-versary. We celebrated by going to Carino's Italian Restaurant. Then we finished off the evening by working in the trailer until 11:30. Amazingly enough, we got it all processed and put somewhere! We have a lot of pre-orders this time so we are full to the brim. And it's all out of the truck now.

October 16 Lubbock, TX
We drove on to our next stop today. We got here early enough that I could do laundry and we both worked on processing our new stuff. We went to Souper Salad for supper. They usually have good food.
October 15 Abilene, TX
We had breakfast with Mickey and Donald. There's a little cage in the ABC Food Store. Anything you eat there is wonderful. We had a breakfast burrito. It was so good.
We worked hard all morning getting ready to leave. It always takes longer than we expect. Our sale was scheduled for 5-7:00 in Abilene, so we needed about 3 hours to get there. We had so much stuff and not enough space. We finally put some pre-orders and all my books in the truck on the floor. It's so full that we can't sleep in there tonight, so we went to a motel. Actually you can't walk in there either. There's no floor left.
We were only 15 minutes late to Abilene. Luckily the Church is on the east side of town, right off the highway. There was only 2 people waiting and they were okay with our being late.
A cold front has come through, so the weather is much cooler. I can deal with cold a lot better than hot and humid.

October 14 Keene, TX
Happy birthday to my 2 year old granddaughter, Anabella. She's Jeff's daughter. I've missed both her birthdays now. I don't like that.
We had a long day of restocking the bookmobile and we're not finished yet. I love restocking here. They have such a big selection. I've picked out so many books. I hope we have room for all of them.
I had a wonderful visit with Betty Lynn Holley. She came over to the ABC to see us. She is my sister's sister-in-law. So I think that makes us related too.
We worked until after 7:00. Then we went out for a late supper with Mickey, the store manager. He's become a great friend.
It's been a very hot and humid day. This is probably the hottest day yet on this trip. The humidity was nasty. We aren't used to that anymore. Humidity should be against the law.

October 13 Keene, TX
Amazing! The rain came down hard and heavy in Keene this morning. We didn't get here until this afternoon, around 5:00. We drove through some small showers and fog. It's just been misty and foggy here tonight.
We spent about an hour with Mickey and George here at the ABC, then went to get our parking spot for the night. Then our friends Emery and Patty picked us up for supper. We had an enjoyable evening. We visited long enough that the restaurant closed while we were still there. They were polite and just let us talk.

October 12 Midland, TX
Sometimes the drive time seems so long. It makes such a difference rather you're driving or riding. Maybe it's time to get my CDL and make Jim ride and ride and ride.....
Midland was a nice sale too. In two sales we've done more business then we do in a week sometimes. We had another after hours sale but after awhile you just ALMOST get used to that.
It's been trying to rain off and on all day. After our sale finished, the rain seems to have set in to stay awhile. It's a nice gentle rain, the kind that's nice to listen to while you're going to sleep.

October 11 El Paso, TX
Our sale as suppose to be from 1-4:00 today in El Paso We drove up to the Church at 12:00. Before Jim even had the motor turned off, a lady was at our door asking if we were open yet. I don't quite understand that kind of mentality. No, we weren't open for another 5-7 minutes. It takes us that long to get set up. We probably sold $1000 worth of food and books before we were suppose to open at 1:00.
Jim had a nice surprise during the sale. A man that he worked with in Christian Record Services for the Blind, came on the truck. He came especially to see Jim, he didn't even buy anything!
When we come to El Paso, they fix a lunch as a fund raiser. We really had a BIG turn out. I think El Paso is our biggest one day sale - always. They about run us out of merchandise. One more sale before we restock in Keene.
We drove on to Van Horn, TX after the sale (which lasted until 6 instead of 4:00). So we ended up with an eleven hour day. I'm tired!!!

October 10 White Sands & Missile Site
We had a fantastic afternoon. First we went to the White Sands Missile Range Museum. There must have been at least 50 different kinds of missiles out there, including one that looks like a flying saucer. The weather was perfect.
Next we went back to the White Sands National Monument. This time we drove through since we didn't have the truck. It's amazing to have this huge beach in the middle of New Mexico. I took way too many pictures, but it was so pretty out there. We actually got out and climbed a sand dune. Lots of kids had sleds. We didn't. I set down to slide, but it didn't work. It was worth a try.
October 9 Las Cruses, NM
There isn't much to tell about today. We took the truck to the repair shop at 8:30. We were able to stay in the truck while they worked on the truck. By 1:00 we were driving away with smiles on our faces. The brakes were fixed! They replaced two parts. By 1:05 Jim knew the problem was not completely fixed. We went back at 2:00 and set there until 5:00, when it really was fixed. It got very hot in the truck. And I'm so glad that I had a book to read.
They had to send someone to El Paso, TX to get another part for the brakes. When they finally installed it on the truck, they realized that the original part had been put on backwards. Amazing! How many millions of miles have been driven with backwards brakes????
I just marvel at God's timing and protection. Any problem with brakes and tires can be life threatening. He protects us daily and carries us through until we can get to a place that can fix things, and we always have an empty time slot of time to fix it. Isn't that wonderful?

October 8 Las Cruces, NM
We made a quick stop at the White Sands National Monument Museum today, on our way to Las Cruces. This is our third time going by there. We only spent about a half hour at the musuem, then hurried on. I really want to go back.
We found a place to get two more tires. We seem to wear those suckers out too fast.
After the tire place, we had to find a place to work on the brakes. We couldn't get in today, so have an appointment first thing in the morning.
Don Blystone met us at our sale and helped us like usual. He's great. It's nice to have extra hands when we have a crowd. Don used to work at the Press with us.
Jim was watching the news and weather a few minutes ago. It looks like all the places we've been to are having unusually cold weather (the northern states) or snow (Colorado). Even Texas is having rain and tornado warnings. We'll be going there next week. Hopefully that will be over before we get there.
We are so thankful that we went north first on this trip. We have been so blessed.

October 7 Alamogordo, NM
The fall colors that we have seen so far seem to be more of the burnt orange, reds, yellows and browns than any bright colors. The mountains between here and Roswell had some neat colors.
We had another flat tire tonight. It didn't blow out, it just was a slow leak. So we need to look for another tire tomorrow or Friday.
Tonight was a slow sale. But we meet some interesting people. Our last customer came in about 20 - 25 minutes after we closed. I had finished cashing up and Jim was almost finished putting bubble wrap and the rods on the book shelves. He said that he just wanted to look around and see what a bookmobile was all about. He ended up buying 5 cans of food. So I cashed up again. I guess it's good practice.
We've stayed in this RV Park before. We don't fit. The truck sets out in the road a little. But there's plenty of room around us.

October 6 Roswell, NM
After we checked out of the motel, we spent an hour or so working in the truck in their parking lot. The motel had a Continental breakfast, but after looking at it, we decided that surely someone else needed it more than we did.
The drive to Roswell seemed long. Probably because I didn't have a book to read. I forgot to plan ahead.
We ate at Golden Corral in Roswell. I hope this was an off day for them. The food was yuck!!!!!
Our sale was busy tonight. I like it that way. I hate to just stand there and wait for customers.

October 5 Clovis, NM
As we head south, the warmer it is. And the fact that we are at a lower elevation helps too.
At the Clovis sale we met a pastor friend that we knew back in our California days, 83-84. The world is so small sometimes!
We're in a motel again tonight. Maybe I'll be brave enough to try the truck again tomorrow. At least it's warm enough to keep the windows open and the fire off.

October 4 Las Vegas
What an interesting day. The Church had decided to combine the bookmobile sale with a yard sale. We were open from 12-3:00. There was lots of traffic, but not very many sales. We had a nice afternoon, meeting people and enjoying the weather. It was so nice out, not too hot, cold, wet or even windy - just perfect.
Sometimes we enjoy our work so much, that it's hard to remember that we're working. But don't tell the boss!

October 3 Las Vegas, NM
What a wonderful little church here in Las Vegas. pastor Bird is the pastor here and in Trinidad, CO. I've never seen a Church like this one. After his sermon, he asked if anyone had questions or comments. There was an exchange of ideas for the next 10 - 15 minutes. Everyone felt like they were a part of this church.
We stayed for the fellowship lunch. I think all 20 church members stayed too. Everyone was so friendly. We're looking forward to our sale tomorrow to with these people too.
Tonight we found a neat restaurant for supper. I usually don't try new things, but I'm glad that I did tonight. I had an eggplant and hummus sandwich on pita bread. It was so good. I let Jim have a taste of my sandwich. I really had to guard my food after that because he liked it better than his own food.
We are enjoying staying in the motel. After 3 days of this, it might be hard to go back to sleeping in the truck.

October 2 Las Vegas, NM
We are so lucky (BLESSED) to be alive!!! We were expecting for it to get to 15 degrees or so last night. So we closed the windows, put on extra quilts, and turned up the heat. In the middle of the night, I woke up with a headache and my heart was really pounding. A couple minutes later the carbon monoxide alarm started beeping. We opened windows quickly. There was no wind, but it eventually cleared out. Only then did the alarm turn off.
We slept the rest of the night with three windows open and lots of prayer. Also, remember it was 15 degrees outside. We did turn the electric heater on later, but it blew the circuits by morning.
An interesting side note on this, is that we have worked hard to make the truck air tight. The windows have been reinstalled and sealed to keep it from leaking when it rains. And we fixed the cracks in the ceiling. Now we need to look at what to do next .. .. .. leave windows open in the middle of winter weather, or what?
When you consider that we are working for God, we know why these things happen. That's exciting! We know that our Lord is always stronger then the evil one.
The next exciting thing on our agenda is the engine brakes. We just had that fixed last week and rechecked twice while in the Denver area. Yesterday they were locking up and making noises on the mountain going to Alamosa. Jim talked to a mechanic there. He said even if he looked at it, he didn't have parts to fix it. We'll have to wait until we find a freightliner dealer, and pray a lot until then. This is a good time to ask you to please remember us DAILY in your prayers.
So we've been driving mountain roads all day. Our angels have been busy. We're fine and so blessed!
Our sale in Trinidad was interesting. The pastor there has been advertising in the local paper that we were coming. The last ad was on the front page. We actually had more local town people then we had our church people. Several expressed their plans to come back next year.
I know that you won't be surprised to know that we're staying in a motel the next three nights. It seems like a smart thing to do.

October 1 Alamoso, CO
We had a big mountain to go over today. The best part about it was the beautiful fall colors. One place in particular was gorgeous. I wanted a picture of that. First I had to find my camera while we were driving. The batteries were dead. So I changed batteries. They were dead too. We use rechargeable batteries. I could have charged them but that view was going fast. By the time I found regular batteries, it was too late. Nothing else compared with that view. But I did get a couple other decent pictures. Not too bad, since I took these out the window doing 65 MPG.
We had a very nice sale tonight, once we got there. Our GPS was crazy. I should have checked to see if there was a full moon.
